Why do you want to lose weight?

As we move into Week 3, are you feeling motivated or discouraged? I was thinking today that it would be important for all of us to really be thinking about why we want to lose weight.

For me, I was just tired of talking about losing 30 pounds, but never really doing anything about it. When we came up with the 12 week challenge I really liked the idea of losing this weight before the end of the year. I am sure it has been my new years resolution for like 6-7 years now. On December 31, I want to be able to say that I accomplished what I set out to do.

Another reason why I also am wanting to lose weight is that I am not getting any younger and working with the elderly reminds me, on a daily basis, how important it is to take care of yourself. Before you know it, you will be 60. For me I want to enjoy retirement. I want to play with my kids and grand-kids and travel the world. I dont want to restrict myself by dealing with health issues that are a consequence of poor decisions that I made years prior.

What is your motivation? Post in the comments below.

  1. My motivation stems mostly from material things... I am not gonna lie!! I want to look good!! I want to buy clothes anywhere, go on vacations, ride rollercoasters, feel moderately comfortable in an airplane seat... the motivations I have that are not material things have to do with my health. I want to be able to breathe easier, snore less, have less knee pain, live past 45 years old, and not be on the verge of diabetes. I just want to be a part of the population again... I want to blend. My whole life I have been the fat one, and its embarressing. I am ready to not be embarrrssed anymore!!

  2. Hi, thanks for your comment Desire!! You guys sound so motivated. I really do have that desire to lose weight but really struggling this week for the lack of being able to buy groceries. I have always wondered what it would be like to not have to automatically walk to the plus size clothing, or find a pair of pants that I love that will last me year after year after year, instead of only 1 year if I am lucky because of holes in the crotch of pants from thigh friction...sick huh! Haha! Desire' like you said, I want it for material stuff to and that is to look good. and the more I like my appearance the more I love myself (I know beauty is on the inside to you guys)but those really go hand in hand, and if you take care of your self physically the healthier you are and when you are treating your body and giving it the things it needs most likely you wont have those health problems in the future. You all, I know weightloss is very important, being healthy is the number 1 priority, but many don't do this because that means needing to be motivated and sacraficing what your bodies wants for what your body needs. We are habit forming creatures and we need to have the good healthy habits. I say all this because I know what I need to do and I am working on it the best I can. I still have a long way to go.

  3. Amy, the last you said really hit home for me. Knowing what you need to do and actually doing is sometimes a world away. That divide is what has put off losing weight for me for so many years. I think we all know what we need to do, but to actually practice what we know is another thing. It wasnt until I started practicing what I know that I started to lose weight. For me, I knew that if I count calories that I will lose weight. It is just a matter of bringing together what you know with action. I know it is hard if you dont have the money, but I think we are all in the same boat. I personally am saving money on this diet by prepping most my meals at home, but I am losing a lot of money by taking myself off the nights! I guess it all depends on what you think your health is worth. Remember if you dont have your health you dont have anything. If it is something you really want, then put it on your credit card or get a loan. I know that may sound bad, but once you lose your health you cant always get it back. Losing weight will only get harder and harder as you get older. I dont want to wake up one day and regret that I didnt make changes when I was younger.
